Could you give us an introduction to Princess Juliana International Airport Holding (PJIAH) and how the airport has evolved to handle increasing passenger traffic?

PJIAH is responsible for the strategic oversight and development of Sint Maarten’s primary gateway to the world, together with the management board led by CEO Brian Mingo. Over the years, the airport has transformed into a modern hub equipped to handle increasing passenger numbers. With significant investments in infrastructure and technology, PJIAH has introduced advanced facilities such as state-of-the-art passenger processing systems, expanded terminal spaces and enhanced operational workflows to ensure smooth handling of peak traffic. These advancements have cemented the airport’s reputation as a key player in regional air travel.

The airport serves as the lifeline of Sint Maarten’s economy, facilitating a modern gateway for tourists to the island and supporting local businesses that depend on tourism. It also plays a pivotal role in regional trade by enabling efficient cargo movements. To strengthen its connectivity, the airport has expanded its network of destinations and forged partnerships with major airlines, enhancing direct links to key destinations in North America, Europe, as well as in the Caribbean. Recent collaborations with international carriers aim to increase flight frequencies and introduce new routes to further strengthen Sint Maarten’s position as a tourism and trade hub.

Can you highlight what new technologies or upgrades have been implemented to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency?

Our brand-new terminal building incorporates cutting-edge technology to enhance both passenger experience and operational efficiency. Features include advanced biometric systems for faster check-ins and security screening, automated baggage handling systems and real-time flight information displays. The design also integrates energy-efficient solutions and modern amenities, ensuring comfort and sustainability. These upgrades reflect PJIAH’s commitment to delivering a world-class airport experience.

Sustainability is a core focus for the airport. We have implemented energy-efficient lighting and waste management practices to minimize our environmental impact. Additional initiatives are being planned to reduce carbon emissions include the electrification of ground service equipment and promoting sustainable practices among stakeholders. As part of our long-term strategy, the airport is exploring innovative solutions to achieve net-zero emissions in line with global aviation standards. Hurricane Irma stressed the importance of robust infrastructure and crisis management. Key lessons include the need for proactive disaster planning, resilient construction standards, and effective stakeholder collaboration.

How important was community engagement to facilitate successful rebuilding after the hurricane that can make all persons of Sint Maarten proud?

Local community engagement is essential to the airport’s reconstruction success. By involving citizens in the rebuilding process, PJIAH has built on trust among the people of Sint Maarten. Initiatives such as public consultations and employment opportunities during reconstruction have been key for the airport. This inclusive approach has resulted  in an airport that not only serves as a gateway for the island but also reflects the spirit of the community.
